One thing our patients mention right away is how professional, welcoming, and accommodating our team feels, and after Kybella®, that matters because you should never be guessing at home. The single most important rule is simple: plan for swelling and protect the area for the first 48 to 72 hours. Use cold compresses during the first 24 hours, skip strenuous exercise and alcohol for 48 hours, sleep with your head elevated the first night, and call us right away if anything feels off.
First 24 to 48 hours after Kybella®: ice, elevation, and a short “no” list
Swelling usually starts quickly and often peaks around 48 to 72 hours. In the first two days, your job is to keep inflammation down and avoid anything that pushes more fluid into the area.
Do this today: Cold compress 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for the first 24 hours. Keep it gentle. No aggressive pressure.
- Sleep with your head elevated the first night. A couple of pillows usually does the trick.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, and heat on the neck for 48 hours. Heat tends to make swelling feel bigger and last longer.
- Skip vigorous workouts and heavy lifting for 48 hours. Light walking is generally fine if you feel good.
- Avoid alcohol for 48 hours. It can increase swelling and bruising.
- Hold off on blood-thinning supplements for 48 hours unless your prescribing physician has told you otherwise. If you are on prescribed blood thinners, let us know before treatment so we can guide you safely.
And in San Francisco, the cooler evenings can actually feel comforting after Kybella®. If you’re heading home through Lower Pacific Heights near Japantown and Fillmore, pick up easy snacks and a soft gel cold pack so you’re not improvising later.
Days 3 to 7: what “normal swelling” looks like, and what to stop doing
By day three, tenderness often eases, but the swelling can still look dramatic. That’s common with kybella injections for double chin. Bruising can show up, and temporary numbness is also typical. For many people, the swelling gradually settles over 1 to 4 weeks.
What we generally recommend during week one
- Keep workouts moderate if you return to exercise after 48 hours. If swelling surges after a hard session, scale back for a couple days.
- Don’t massage aggressively unless we specifically instruct you to. Some people do well with very gentle lymphatic-style movement, but we want you doing the right thing at the right time.
- Avoid heat exposure for the full 48 hours, and be cautious with anything that overheats you during the first week.
- Leave the area alone. No picking at bruises, no pressing or “checking” the area repeatedly.
Patients often tell us they felt put at ease because we answer questions professionally and honestly. Keep that same energy at home. If something worries you, don’t wait it out in silence. We’d rather talk through what you’re seeing than have you guessing.
Neck skincare after Kybella®: sunscreen even in fog, and gentle basics
Kybella for chin fat works under the skin, but the surface still matters during recovery. Keep your routine simple and calm for the first week. Gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, and a basic moisturizer are usually enough.
San Francisco tip: Put sunscreen on your neck daily, even in foggy months. UV exposure can make lingering discoloration from bruising look more noticeable.
If you also come to us for other services, let us know what’s on your calendar so we can space things safely. The timing matters, and we’ll keep your plan sensible.
When to call us after Kybella® in San Francisco (and when it’s just part of it)
Normal early effects include swelling, tenderness, bruising, and temporary numbness. What we don’t want you to push through is anything that suggests infection or an unusual reaction.
Reach out right away if you notice:
- Severe pain that is escalating instead of improving
- Trouble breathing or swallowing
- Fever, expanding redness, warmth, or drainage
- Asymmetry that concerns you, especially if it appears suddenly
"He is incredibly knowledgeable, takes the time to answer all of your questions, and is very easy to reach if you ever need follow-up support, which made me feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire process."
